1. Confirm your Pregnancy and Schedule your First Appointment
The first thing to do is call your doctor or seek medical support to confirm a healthy pregnancy. They normally don't want to see you until 8 - 10 weeks to perform your first transvaginal ultrasound. At this appointment, you can expect your doctor to check for key physical indicators determining a "normal implantation", see your baby's heartbeat, and confirm your estimated due date. The moment you finally see that beating little heart growing inside you is indescribable. Your baby!! I remember it being such a surreal experience filled with so many emotions. Take it in. They will also discuss any potential risks or concerns and provide you with valuable information on how to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
2. Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins
If you are not already taking prenatal vitamins, it's important you begin taking them as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed. Prenatal vitamins have many essential nutrients that help you fill any gaps that are lacking in your diet. Specifically, you should make sure your prenatal has sufficient folic acid which prevents neural tube defects, and iron which supports the development of the placenta and fetus. Additionally, food-based or plant-based vitamins are more absorbable and gentler on your stomach which can be very useful in your first trimester. Ritual has a couple of flavors that you can choose from if one flavor triggers nausea more than the other. There are so many great options out there so choose any brand that works for you!
3. Adopt Healthy Habits
If you are like us, you already are thinking of all the ways to make sure your baby is healthy. It is very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy for you and your baby. Make sure you are eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. It's also important to limit your caffeine intake to 200 mg of less as a precaution and avoid alcohol, smoking, and recreational drugs altogether!
4. Educate Yourself
It's an exciting journey! Take some time to educate yourself on pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting tips. You can take a tour of the hospital you plan to deliver at, attend birthing classes, and read all the different types of books to prepare you to make informed decisions for yourself and your baby.
5. Inform Your Partner and Closed Loved Ones
There is no universal right or wrong time to share this news with your family and friends. Do what works best for you! Miscarriage percentages significantly decline after your first trimester, so some people prefer to wait until then to share. However, sharing the news with your family and friends can also help alleviate any anxiety or stress you may be experiencing. Their love and support can make a difference throughout your pregnancy. It's entirely up to you and what feels best for you!
6. Take Care of Yourself Emotionally
You are building a human. It can take a toll on you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Hormones are changing and can affect you in different ways. It's crucial to prioritize self-care and manage stress. Engage in activities that help you relax, like prenatal yoga, meditation, or taking regular walks. Listen to your body and allow yourself to feel each part of this miracle. Remember you are not alone, look for support groups in your area and find other moms in the same stage of the motherhood journey to lean on. It makes a world of difference to talk about your concerns and challenges with like-minded mommas.
7. Prepare for Your Baby
Start preparing for your baby's arrival by creating a nursery (Hyperlink), researching and purchasing essential items, and making a baby registry list (Hyperlink) to send to your friends and family. Research and select a healthcare provider for your baby and consider attending childbirth education classes, also offered online, to help you feel more confident and prepared for labor and delivery.
8.Embrace the Journey
Lastly, embrace the journey of pregnancy with an open heart! Cherish each milestone, stay connected with your growing baby, and celebrate the joy of becoming a parent. There are numerous books and apps that follow your pregnancy week by week to educate you on your baby's development as well as changes you should expect to notice in your own body. Remember to listen to your body and seek professional advice if you have any concerns along the way.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! It can be hard, exhausting, and emotional at times, but it's an incredible and transformative journey that brings immense joy and a new kind of unconditional love! You are not alone in this journey! You are going to be a great mom!
