The thought I would need to prepare my car for my infant did not occur to me beyond the knowledge I would need an infant car seat. It all came later once I encountered problems. To help you bypass the issues, I have four items that may help you.
The first is a Rear-Facing Car Seat Mirror. You won’t be able to see your baby, whether something is wrong, if they’re sleeping, or completely content. Some companies make cameras parents can use instead of mirrors, but I have found the mirrors to work just fine. However, I will link a highly-rated camera here for those who want to explore that option.
Once you get a Rear Facing Car Seat Mirror, you’ll need ANOTHER mirror to put underneath your rear-view mirror so you can see your infant without having to turn around. You’ll use this into the toddler years and beyond.
Thirdly, I suggest getting window shades to keep the sun from shining directly on your infant. Babies easily overheat and if you're driving, chances are you won't notice until they're very hot and very angry. I had the Enovoe shade for my first and they were perfect, easy to store and take with you anywhere, and just as easy to attach to the window. However, once she was old enough, she quickly figured out how to pull them off and tear them to shreds. So for older children, I would suggest something more secure like these Munchkin ones.
The fourth and final thing to get, which is totally optional and mainly a matter of prevention, are WeatherTech mats. These are life savers. If your car already came with laser-fitted, high-sided protective mats, you are in the clear. If not, these will save you a lot of stress, time, and energy in the long run. They make my car super easy to clean up and if something spills, I don’t worry that it will get on my carpet.

They have seat protectors that I also use. These keep messes contained and protect your seats from the permanent indents your car seats will make on your car’s seats. If you would like some that protect the back of your seats, this one by Munchkin may be for you. Be aware that it won’t have the substantial footprint the WeatherTech ones have.
I hope some or all of these steps make you feel even more prepared than you were ten minutes ago. Good luck!
